HARARE, August 1 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe's ruling party has won majority seats in parliament, according to the results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Wednesday.

Out of the 153 National Assembly seat results, the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front won 109 and was performing strongly in rural constituencies, its traditional stronghold.

The opposition MDC Alliance was coming a distant second with 41 seats, winning mostly in urban areas where it has gained massive support.

The ZEC said it will announce the remaining results later on Wednesday.

There are 210 seats in the bicameral parliament.

Zimbabweans went to the polls on Monday to elect a president and a new parliament.

The ZEC has said the result of the presidential election is likely to be announced by August 4.
