WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Nancy Pelosi, the newly-elected House speaker, on Thursday invited President Donald Trump to deliver his annual update to Congress on Jan. 29.
In a letter to Trump, Pelosi said she invites the president to deliver his "State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in the House Chamber."
Pelosi posted a copy of the letter on Twitter.
The formal invitation for Trump came on the day that a new, divided Congress convened and Pelosi, a California Democrat, was elected as House speaker, the second time during her political career.
The annual speech is traditionally made by the U.S. president before a joint session of Congress in the House chamber at the invitation of the speaker.
A State of the Union address by Trump on the date Pelosi has proposed would potentially come amid an ongoing partial government shutdown, unless the White House and Congress resolve a prolonged impasse over funding for the president's long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall.
