SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- A militant was killed and a policeman wounded Friday in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight broke out at village Dar-Ganiegund area of Tral in Pulwama district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Today a militant was killed in a gunfight here with government forces," a police official posted in Tral told Xinhua. "While fighting the militant a policeman was also wounded and he was later evacuated to hospital."
The slain militant according to police was a foreign national.
Police officials claim recovery of arms and ammunition from the spot.
According to officials the village was cordoned off after government forces launched a search operation based on credible inputs about the presence of militants.
Meanwhile, police issued an advisory asking locals not to go near the gunfight site until the spot is cleared of explosive material.
Last month, seven civilians were killed after a bomb went off at a gunfight site in region's Kulgam district.
A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
