WAKISO, Uganda, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers Sports Club (SC) on Monday appointed Mexican Javier Martinez Espinosa as the new head coach.
Lawrence Mulindwa, the club director, unveiled the new coach here at the St. Mary's Stadium Kitende in the central Ugandan district of Wakiso.
"We are happy to have a new coach on a two-year contract. We are a very ambitious club and that is why we have changes here," he said.
"At Vipers SC, we have a five-year strategic plan. We are following it very critically. We made some promises. Among the plans was to make Vipers SC the number one (club) in Uganda, owning its stadium and necessary infrastructure," Mulindwa added.
Martinez Espinosa pledged to bring professionalism to the club. He said the team will have a tough challenge defending the Uganda Premier League title, winning the Uganda Cup and also competing in the Confederation of African Football Champions League.
Vipers SC parted ways with their Portuguese head coach Miguel Jorge Da Costa last month after the team reached the quarterfinals of the regional CECAFA Club Championships.
Da Costa was appointed in March 2017 and guided Vipers SC to the 2017/18 Uganda Premier League title.
