ANKARA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- A farmer in Turkey's central Yozgat province discovered a fossil belonging to a mammoth that lived 8 million years ago, local museum announced on Tuesday.

The fossilized jawbone was found by farmer Alper Dusunceli when he was ploughing his land, Yozgat Museum Director Hasan Senyurt said, adding that the fossil was then handed over to museum.

The fossil is initially estimated at around 8 million years old, and archeological experts will make further study on it, Senyurt said.

This was the first mammoth fossil to be discovered in the place where various fossils had been found before, Senyurt added.

Located at the intersection of various cultures on Eurasia continent, Turkey has diverse historical and archaeological heritage.
