SARAJEVO, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-seven years later, the first train connecting Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) capital Sarajevo and Bihac, a city located some 310 km northwest of the capital, departed from Sarajevo Railway Station on Monday.

During the ceremony, general director of Federation of BiH Railways Enis Dzafic said that the aim is to connect BiH major cities and to unite them under a unique railway network, which will enable new development projects beneficial to BiH citizens.

Devastated by the Bosnian war in the 1990s, the cost of reconstruction of the railway amounted to 2.8 million KM (1.7 million U.S. dollars).

According to planned schedule for 2017/2018 year, the train will depart from Sarajevo at 4 p.m. and arrive in Bihac at 00:28 a.m. From Bihac, the train will depart at 1:57 a.m. and arrive in Sarajevo at 10:28 a.m.

Experts claim that the newly reconstructed railway will have a significant perspective and can become the driving force for economic development of this part of BiH. Considering that railways offer the cheapest transport of people and goods from the capital Sarajevo, up to north part of BiH and Bihac, and continuing to the neighboring Croatia, experts predict that competitiveness of BiH's domestic economy will be raised.(1 U.S. dollar=1.68 KM)
