PARIS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Olympic women's singles tennis champion Monica Puig on Wednesday announced her withdrawal from the 2018 French Open without complete recovery from hip injury.

Puig bagged the first Olympic gold medal for Puerto Rico at the 2016 Rio Games. The 24-year-old player could not recover from hip injury that she suffered during the Italian Open last week.

"It pains me to be missing Roland Garros for the first time since 2010," Puig wrote on Twitter.

"I understand that injuries are part of the game and while they are not fun, they can teach you a lot about yourself and your body," she added.

Puig, currently ranked 62nd, lost her second-round match to champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia at last year's French Open.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words of support and I am working hard to make my return for the grass court season. Can't wait to be back out there competing again soon!" wrote Puig.
