BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China ends losing streak with victory over Indonesia in World Cup qualifiers
China ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a 2-1 win over Indonesia in the World Cup qualifiers in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province on Oct. 15.
First-half goals from Behram Abduweli and Zhang Yuning secured China's first victory in the third round of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The victory put China level with Indonesia on three points after four matches in the six-team Group C, where Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain currently occupy the top four spots.
2. Zheng Qinwen qualifies for WTA Finals
Zheng Qinwen has secured qualification for the WTA Finals to be held from November 2 to 9 in Riyadh, becoming the first Chinese singles player to qualify for the star-studded season-ending tournament since Li Na in 2013.
Zheng began her season in fine form by reaching the final at the Australian Open. She also pocketed a historical gold at the Paris Olympics while her performances this season, including a final defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at the Wuhan Open on Oct. 14, saw her break into the world's top 10 for the first time in her career, peaking at No. 7.
The men's side also registered breakthrough as the lastest ATP rankings saw Shang Juncheng and Zhang Zhizhen both securing spots in the ATP top 50 rankings, the first time two Chinese male players have simultaneously been listed among the world's top 50.
3. China bags five golds at ISSF World Cup Final
China won five gold and three bronze medals from 12 events at the three-day ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi, India that concluded on Oct. 17,.
Huang Yuting won the women's 10m air rifle with a new world record of 254.5 points and Olympic champions Sheng Lihao (men's 10m air rifle), Xie Yu (men's 10m air pistol), and Li Yuehong (men's 25m rapid fire pistol) stepped on top of the podium again while Olympic silver medalist Qi Ying became the first Chinese shooter to win men's trap at a World Cup Final.
Liu Yukun, who was awarded ISSF Men's Athlete of the Year prior to the tournament, narrowly missed the podium in men's 50m rifle 3 positions with a fourth place finish.
4. Liaoning starts strong in title defense in CBA 2024 season curtain-raiser
The Liaoning Flying Leopards began their Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league title defense with a 123-112 victory over the Zhejiang Golden Bulls as the CBA league celebrates its 30th season.
Ahead of the season's curtain raiser, Liaoning received their CBA championship rings and saw their fourth championship flag raised.
After three rounds, Liaoning, the Beijing Ducks, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, the Zhejiang Lions and the Shanxi Loongs persevered their unbeaten records after three games played.
5. Yin Ruoning becomes first Chinese golfer to claim LPGA Shanghai title
World No. 4 Yin Ruoning of China triumphed at the 2024 Buick LPGA Shanghai at the Qizhong Garden Golf Club on Sunday, becoming the first local player to win the title in the tournament's history.
Yin finished with a remarkable four-round total of 263 strokes, 25 under par. Japan's Mao Saigo and Kim Sei-young of South Korea tied for second place.■
