ACCRA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior Ghanaian official has expressed deep appreciation for the benefits Ghanaians have been deriving from the cooperation between the West African country and China.

"We have examples of developmental projects supported by China all over the country. In this very community, 25 people have been to China on short-term courses," Minister of State at the office of the president Catherine Afeku told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.

She spoke to Xinhua in Axim, a coastal fishing community where a Chinese government-supported fish landing site is to be built.

The people of Axim and the Western Region, in general, have also received our share of these investments, said Afeku.

"We are benefiting from the China-aided mini-harbor project. Apart from that, we also have roads, like the Lagos-Abidjan road, it was a Chinese company that also collaborated with the government of Ghana," she said.

The goal of the construction of the fish landing site was to revamp the economic potentials of artisanal fishing in Axim, 218 km west of the capital.

The minister added that a kindergarten to be built in the harbor will be of great benefit to female fishmongers since they will now have a place to put their children while they work and preserve their excess fish in the cold stores.

"But what is more important for us is human capacity development where you have young men and women from this community studying medicine in China and other courses in China.

"These have been made possible through the solid friendship between Ghana and China, dating back to the era of our first president Kwame Nkrumah, who is from this area," Afeku said.
