KABUL, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Two persons, including a senior police official, were killed and three civilians were wounded in a shooting attack here overnight, police said Friday.
"Including Azizullah Karwan, commander of Special Operations Police Forces of eastern Paktika province, two persons were martyred after unknown gunmen opened fire in Ferdowsi Park in Police District 9 of Kabul roughly at 08:30 p.m. local time Thursday," Kabul police said in a statement.
The attackers fled the scene shortly after the shooting.
The Taliban militant group has claimed the responsibility for the attack.
Karwan had survived more than 35 attacks, including several suicide bombings, over the past 16 years, according to local media reports.
The Afghan security forces' casualties have risen recently as they struggle against a surge in attacks by Taliban and other anti-government fighters.
