TOKYO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended higher Monday with the benchmark Nikkei stock index closing at its highest level in three-and-a-half months after the United States and China avoided levying trade tariffs on each other's goods.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 72.01 points, or 0.31 percent, from Friday to close the day at 23,002.37.
However, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 1.5 points, or 0.08 percent, to finish at 1,813.75.
Glass and ceramics products, machinery, and air transportation-liked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
