SAN FRANCISCO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. leading semiconductor chip maker Intel Corporation (Intel) has announced its major technical support for a cloud project of the Linux community for optimizing edge computing systems and applications, the Linux Foundation said Tuesday.

The foundation, a non-profit vendor neutral organization, said Intel made a considerable contribution to the Akraino Edge Stack by opening major components of its Wind River Titanium Cloud Software and Intel Network Edge Virtualization Software Development Kit (NEV SDK) to the Linux community that will facilitate high-availability cloud services.

Intel and 12 other mostly Chinese organizations have joined the AT&T-founded Akraino program.

The new members are Altiostar, China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Docker, Huawei, iFlyTek, New H3C Group, Tencent, ZTE, and 99Cloud.

With automate services from edge to core, Akraino Edge Stack provides an open source software stack for low-latency, carrier-grade edge computing networking technology.

The technology supports edge computing applications "running in virtual machines and containers to support reliability and performance requirements," the Linux Foundation said.

The Akraino project is more of an edge infrastructure framework, which will accelerate interoperability and integration, for a digital infrastructure edge.

"Intel's contribution of production-quality edge computing infrastructure software offers users new levels of flexibility to scale edge cloud services faster ... and helps provide an open and scalable platform to encourage broad community involvement," said Imad Sousou, corporate vice president and general manager of the Open Source Technology Center at Intel.
