PHNOM PENH, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Cambodian bus driver died and 15 foreign tourists injured early Tuesday when their tour bus crashed into a cargo truck on a highway in Cambodia's Kampong Cham province, a local police chief said.

The bus was heading to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap province when it collided with the truck on National Road No. 6 in Bateay district, about 120 km east of Phnom Penh, said police chief of Bateay district Sam Nal.

"The two vehicles drove in the same direction, and the bus crashed into the middle part of the truck when the truck carelessly made a U-turn," he told Xinhua.

Sam Nal said the injured foreigners included four Germans, three Britons, two French nationals, two Israelis, three Thais and one Chinese.

He said the victims had been sent to a hospital in Phnom Penh soon after the accident.

"Five of them got seriously injured," he said.

Death toll from road traffic accidents remains high in Cambodia. In 2017, 1,780 people had been killed in the accidents, while 5,539 others got injured, according to a government report.
